The 61-year-old's family reported him missing to the NYPD after he contacted them with suicidal messages, said a family member on a GoFundMe page to help raise money for his funeral.
The family says it was unable to get the police department to respond because he did not live in the city. They finally got a little help from Florida police where they live who tried to intervene with the New York police. A few steps were taken, but a search was not conducted.
Fast forward a week, and a man walking in the East Village noticed Corbis sitting in his car. The next day he was still there, and the man called the police. The NYPD responded and found Corbis on Friday, Aug. 31, where he had been sitting for one week in his car in the East Village.
Corbis (also known as Weglarz) took his life using a bottle of poison.
The family said on GoFundMe that the last two years had been hard for the man who had a very successful career in computers and cybersecurity. He was employed for years in software development executive roles with Hyperion Solutions (Oracle) in Stamford. At the time of his death, he was employed as the chief technology officer with ECRIT Coaching & Consulting, in Fairfield.
According to his obituary, Corbis was born Geoffrey Weglarz on May 11, 1957, in Dunedin, Florida.
He attended the University of South Florida and then earned his bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University. He earned a masters in digital media and cyber security from Sacred Heart University, where he worked as a video producer/web developer.
And, he was also a well-known and accomplished actor who frequented the dinner theater circuit throughout the country.
Things began to go downhill for Corbis when he lost his job, he suffered from Executive Functioning Disorder (ESD), which is a degenerative disease of the brain's ability to process information. He began to isolate and spiral into depression, which eventually led to his suicide, the GoFundMe page said.
"The more he suffered from financial decline, the more depressed he became," the page said. "He sought medical and psychiatric help with his condition, but there is no cure."
Now, that his body has finally been "noticed" after a week sitting in a car on a busy street, his friends and family have a real desire to hold a dignified and meaningful funeral.
"Thank you for considering donating for his final wishes in this life," the page says.
He is survived by his son, Elias Weglarz; brother, Larry Weglarz; sisters, Pamela Lindemann, Terri Barfield (Rob), Linda Weglarz (Kelley), Tricia Cronin (Charlie); nieces, Erica Lavina (Jay), Kim Lindemann, Brooke Weglarz, Lindsay Weglarz; nephews, Nick Weglarz, Timothy Reese; great-nieces, nephew and friends. A celebration of life will take place in Tampa on Nov. 4.
